So with that being said. Let’s get on with the smoothie making. If you have been following me on Instagram (matt_oliphant_thrive) as of lately. I posted a little tease action this past Wednesday. I asked what you guys thought the secret ingredient(s) were? Some of the guesses I got were:

So what is it?

It’s this high quality grass fed whey protein sourced from New Zealand cows naturally grazing in the fresh green grasslands. So you already know that it will be non-GMO and that the cows were treated with grace and love. On top of the being non-GMO. It’s also gluten free, rBGH free and contains no added sugar or preservatives. It boasts 14 grams of some of the highest quality bio-available protein on earth. To up the nutrient density even more. It is loaded with 26 vitamins and minerals.

What is even cooler is that the minerals are in the chelated amino acid. This essentially means that the mineral have been bound to an amino acid, thus potentially boosting its effectiveness in the body. The jury is still out as to where it’s the best form to opt for. Some research and individuals swear by it. I will let you be the judge and experiment for yourself.

It also boasts omega-3s and 4 billion probiotics, which is a nice little touch. So if you find yourself struggling to get enough sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi or yogurt in your diet. This nutritional shake mix can definitely benefit you in that regards! This nutritional smoothie mix would be similar in the ranks of the Garden of Life Raw Meal, Vega One and Plant Fusion Phood and Orgain Meal. Only difference being that it uses grass fed whey protein where as the other competitors use plant sources of protein.

How does it taste??

By itself, in a shaker bottle with some water or nut, seed, dairy or coconut milk. It tastes pretty solid, but it needs some help if you know what mean. It’s almost too dairy-ish and needs a little more body and texture in the flavor department. The real magic comes when you add in your favorite smoothie ingredients! This is what I recommend as well as Kura Nutrition does too.

Who is this for??

-busy individuals on the go who need a quick boost of nutrition in liquid form/span>
-pro and amateur athletes; can act as a great pre or post workout smoothie. Covers some critical areas of recovery following a workout.
-elderly who are wanting to maintain their overall health, well-being and keep their weight on
-any paleo or primal folks who are big on grass fed whey protein. This might be a nice change of pace and something new for you to try.

I hope you enjoyed that. I just wanted to say thank you to Kura Nutrition for allowing me to try your smoothie mix. Was a pleasure getting to try it and experiment with it. Definitely will be giving these a try again to create some more crazy interesting elixirs

That’s all I have for now. Stay tuned for my next recipe and product review, which will encompass a prized superfood known for it’s performance enhancing benefits especially in the oxygen uptake department. I will leave you with that!

Pomegranate Vanilla Bliss Smoothie

This is probably one of the few fruits that I don’t consume enough of. It just never dawns on me to try it especially in smoothies. Maybe it’s the process that is involved in opening a pomegranate or something! I do know one thing is for sure and that is that the health benefits of Pomegranates are definitely something to take notice of and consider adding to your diet.

For starters Pomegranate. Here is a nutritional run down of this super-fuit:

• Vitamin K1
• Folate (folic acid)
• Potassium
• Magnesium
• Phosphorous
• Calcium
• Amino acids
• Antioxidant phytoestrogens
• Polyphenols
• Protein
• Fiber
• Plant based Omega-3 fatty acids in ALA form

Pretty impressive what this fruit possesses. In fact, pomegranate juice has been shown to be more potent in anti-oxidant potential than red wine or green tea. Thanks in part to the very powerful anti-oxidants called punicalagins. Typically, the highest concentration of punicalagins reside in the peel part of the fruit. So now let’s geek out a little more with a few interesting studies displaying the potential of this gorgeous fruit.

This first study looked at the effects of taking pomegranate juice for 2 weeks on LDL oxidized cholesterol. What the study found was that over the course of 2 weeks there was a decline in LDL oxidized cholesterol. Increased levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis. So using pomegranate juice looks very promising (1).

This next study looked at inflammatory markers in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Patients using pomegranate extract had reduced severity levels of arthritis, joint pain and IL-6 levels (inflammatory marker) (2).

So now onto the recipe part. I have for you this simple and refreshing smoothie that would be the perfect elixir after a long summer run or bike ride or tough training session at the gym. This smoothie could be a perfect pre or post workout smoothie, but especially a pre workout smoothie since pomegranate contains naturally occurring nitrates known to enhance blood flow and boost exercise performance.

– 1 cup coconut water
– 1/2 frozen banana
– 1/4 pomegranate juice
– 1 cup strawberries
– 2 tsp pomegranate powder
– 1 tbsp hemp seeds
– 1/2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean
– A scoop of vanilla vega sport or vega one protein

***Add everything into a blender and blend till desired consistency.***

Here is the exact pomegranate powder I used in this smoothie. I highly recommend it big time!

Maca For Days Smoothie

I have always been interested and fascinated with adaptogens and their ability to balance the mind and body. If you are new to the term “adaptogen.” An adaptogen has the capacity to bring balance to the glandular-hormonal system, cardiovascular system, musculature and nervous system of the human body. In this day and age with the constant “go go” mentality in today’s world. You can begin to see why adaptogens can come in handy big time. I believe we can benefit from these life balancing foods to rebuild, sustain and boost our performance and overall vitality in this lifetime.

A little background on Maca root. Maca is in the cruciferous vegetable family. So think plants like kale, cabbage, broccoli, radishes and turnips. Maca originates in the Peruvian Andes Mountains of South America. This plant is cultivated anywhere between 13, 000 to 14, 000 feet. So pretty high up there!! To give you an idea. That height is the equivalent of Mt. Rainier in Seattle Washington. This plant definitely possesses some special gifts being able to withstand those kinds of harsh conditions.

While there are many well known adaptogens out there. Among my favorites is Maca root. These are some of the main reasons I love Maca so much:

-Maca acts on the hypothalamus gland, which is the gland responsible for your sex hormones
-Nourishes the adrenal glands, by helping and regulating cortisol levels mindfully
-Balances out hormonal health (especially wonderful for anyone dealing with hormonal acne)
-Aphrodisiac for men’s and women’s sexual health. For men, taking Maca improved erectile dysfunction and sperm count. In fact, one study done in 2008 with 16 women participants suffering from different sexual issues took 3000 mg of maca root. The women participants noticed great improvements in libido. (1)

If you are going to take Maca. I like taking anywhere from 500 mg to 1, 500 mg a day. Also opt for the Gelatinized version of Maca root. This gelatinized means that the maca has been cooked to remove the starch content to aid in digestion. You can find it in capsule or powder form. I typically go for the powder form. The brands I like are Organic Burst, TheMacaTeam, Vega and Healthforce!

Now onto the good part!

Maca For Days Smoothie:

-1 cup coconut milk
-1 frozen banana
-2 to 3 medjool dates
-1 Tbsp Jemi Cinnamon Red Maca Almond butter (if you don’t have this nut butter. You can certainly use cashew or almond butter)
-1/4 to 1/2 of Vega Maca chocolate bar
-1 or 2 Tbsp of Gelatinized Maca root (depending on how much maca you like!!)
-1 tsp ceylon or cassia cinnamon
-1/4 tsp ginger powder
-pinch of cayenne pepper

***Toss everything into the blender till desired consistency. Consume the goodness immediately! This is a perfect pre workout or post workout smoothie.***

Maqui Burst Smoothie

Happy Friday Everyone and I hope you guys have had a solid week doing what you love. As Mackelmore says in one of his most recent songs… “Find what it is that you love and do that everyday and do that for the rest of your life and eventually… the world will change.”

If you caught my previous post on Instagram yesterday of part 1 of this creation. The wait is over! Here I have for you the finished smoothie creation in all of its glory. The highlight ingredient in this smoothie is the maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis). It also goes the by name Chilean wineberry. The maqui berry is located in the lush tropical areas of Argentina and Chile.

Cropped Best Maqui Berry

What really attracted me to this ingredient was the color it lends in this elixir and the nutrient density of the berry. In fact, here are some interesting things about the maqui berry and what I believe makes it stand apart from the other popular exotic super-fruits throughout the world. I’m sure many of who are aware of the these names…. think goji, acai and camu camu.

If you ever wanted to know what gives Maqui that deep rich blue/purple color you can give credit to the anthocyanins. Anthocyanins is this potent anti-oxidant present in the fruit and helps fight oxidative stress and a host of other health benefits. Even more interesting is that when you compare maqui berry juice to freeze dried maqui berry powder. According to a study published in the journal Phytochemical Analysis.

They measured the anthocyanin content per 100 milligrams in fresh berry vs freeze dried powder. The freeze dried powder contained a staggering 212 mg per 100 mg compared to the fresh maqui berries containing only 138 mg per 100 mg. Pretty interesting… Huh!? (1)

Maqui berry also nourishes and benefits heart health thanks again to the anti-oxidant prowess of anthocyanins. Here was a neat study done by the Journal of Food Chemistry that focused on investigating the cardiovascular protective qualities of maqui in rats. What the study found was that the maqui extract protected the test animals from heart damage. (2)

Maqui Berry Burst Smoothie

-1 cup coconut water
-1 1/2 frozen banana
-1/2 cup frozen blueberries
-3 Tbsp Maqui Berry powder
-1 tsp ceylon cinnamon
-1 scoop Vega One or Vega Sport Vanilla

***Blend everything into a blender and relish the color in this smoothie!!***

Here is the exact Maqui Berry powder I used for this smoothie!

Beet Root Nitrous Shot

Yo everyone! Hope everyone is having a stellar week so far and attacking the week working with vigor and passion!

So if you are like me and want to fuel your body with the very best of the best. It’s easy to overload your system on the caffeine prior to a training session or competition. This not only sets one up for a potential post workout crash. It also places more stress on the adrenal glands especially if you have already had a cup of coffee earlier in the morning.

Typically, my go to pre workout drink mix is the Vega Pre Workout Energizer either in Acai Berry or Lemon Lime flavor depending on the mood. I really enjoy the effect I get from the Natural Force Nutrition Raw Tea mixture as well. Both of those drinks have around 100 mg of caffeine in them. If you want to take a break from the usual powder form and mix things up a bit. This pre workout elixir will more than satisfy that requirement. Using whole real unprocessed plant ingredients as the basis for this drink. This elixir will prime your workout with these highlight ingredients:

-Beets contain naturally occurring nitrates, known to boost nitric oxide production (NO) to enhance blood flow to the working muscles and brain by relaxing the blood vessels. Beets also contain a compound called betalains, known to improve mental disorders like depression and dementia. Beets are wonderful for male and female sexual health as beets contain boron, which is necessary for the production of the human sex hormones.

-Ginger (rhizome) root contains the famous compound called gingerol, known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and aids in digestion. Especially great if you experience performance anxiety before competing. This could certainly help in that department! Ginger is great for relieving symptoms of nausea, vertigo and other gastrointestinal distress. Ginger is known to reduce muscle pain/soreness following exercise.

-Apples particular in reference to the skin of the apple contain this compound called Quercetin, which has been shown to reduce allergy symptoms and along with having anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. Quercetin also increases the density of the mitochondria coupled with exercise. Pretty neat stuff!

Beet Root Nitrous Shot:

-2 organic oranges

-2 organic beets with the beet greens

-1 organic granny smith or fuji apple

-2 to 3 stalks of celery

-1/2 lemon or 1 lemon depending on how much lemon you like

-1/2 to 1 inch piece of ginger (depending on how gingery you like it!)

-Juice all ingredients. Aim to consume 30 to 45 minutes prior to exercise or competition.

***Always remember to be mindful of the amount of caffeine you are consuming prior to a workout or competition. While this will vary from person to person in how quickly you metabolize caffeine. I would aim for no more than 100 mg before a workout. Another important take away is to cycle your caffeine consumption. This will give your nervous system and adrenal glands a rest.

Your adrenal glands, which sit right above your kidneys are stimulated upon ingesting caffeine. While this is not to say caffeine is bad. It can be used to enhance athletic performance and boost cognitive performance aka flow state and mental focus. Just please be mindful of how much you are consuming on a daily basis. Main take is away is to nourish through whole food nutrition rather than resort for external stimulants all the time to give you energy. Energy comes from within. Thats all for now guys! Thanks for anyone tuning in for today’s recipe. My goal has been to come out with a new and interesting recipe every Tuesday of the week. So stay tuned for future goodness coming your way!***

Cashew Butter Cup

Hope everyone is having a solid week so far! Got an interesting recipe for you and one that you can feel good about eating unlike other kinds of desserts making you feel subpar afterwards. This dessert could certainly act as a pre workout snack about an hour before exercise or hard training sessions as it contains a does of healthy fats, simple sugar from the dates and coconut nectar and protein from the nuts. It could also be a great bedtime snack for any folks trying to put on some weight or lean muscle mass.

So this recipe was inspired from the Thrive Energy Cook book by Brendan Brazier. A lot of the same elements are present in this recipe except for a few twists. You find out real soon what the differences are! Without further a do lets dive into this legit dessert!

Cashew Butter Cups

-3 cups cashews
-1 cup pecans
-4 Tbsp cacao nibs
-6 Medjool pitted dates and soaked for roughly 10 to 15 minutes

To make the crust, in a food processor or high powdered blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec. First combine the cashews and pecans. Process till the nuts are into small pieces. Next toss in the cacao nibs, soaked dates and coconut nectar or yacon syrup. Process and blend till it begins to form this dough like consistency. Once it has reached that stage. Press the dough into cupcake molds keeping in mind to leave enough room for the filling.

-1/3 cup melted coconut oil
-1/3 cup cashew butter
-1/3 cup coconut nectar or yacon syrup
-1/4 cup coconut milk
-1 tsp vanilla extract

To make the filling, combine all ingredients into the blender and blend till desired consistency here. Feel free to add different superfoods like lucuma, goji, acai, maqui or maca. Once the dough and filling are made. Spoon the filling into the dough molds. Once done, place in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Once that that has been met. Bring it out of the refrigerator. Serve on a fancy plate and spoon some of that dank chocolate sauce and begin to slip into heaven for the next few minutes or more depending how many you have!

Chocolate Sauce:
-1 cup of raw cacao powder
-1/2 cup melted coconut oil

To make the chocolate sauce place everything into a blender until desired consistency and smoothness has been reached. I will warn you it’s very tempting to take spoonful of that chocolate sauce and go crazy! Only live once!
